Recruitment/Selection mechanisms (Jason)
- The Ultras "happened" to meet. Family friends, knew each other, close personal connections.
- But then they organized conferences, and the top performers of the conference speakers are ofc worthy of bringing into the inner circles of the movement. Performance was easy to judge/assess, and was relatively public
- The Impressionists —
- basically those who were best at the specific techniques they were developing: "manifested excellence"
- Founding Fathers / PRC / Impressionists
- self-selected, or "those who were doing the obvious best work" got noticed
- sounds a bit like silicon valley selection mechanisms, where there is definitely an elite, but you're able to break in if you impress basically anyone who is "in". We could call this distributed meritocracy?
- If you were a live player, others could tell and they would invite you to things. otherwise they would maintain distance. It happened naturally as a result of socializing
- For the Jesuits, basically the leader (Francis Xavier) was totally in charge
- Revolt of the Public-style movements: none. Anyone can come.
- if you can limit negative capacity of actors, you can reduce your need for selection or filtering
- However: posts on Twitter are default obscure. Going viral is a kind of selection mechanism, based on excellence.
