Tyler on Black Mountain College:

12 faculty, 24 students, Asheville, started at a protestant facility that they didn’t use during the summer. IT ran as a summer school, and then people would basically just pack up at the end of every summer.

Black mountain college was centered in the arts, but was not an arts school.

Inviting Josef Albers (who did not speak English) was a brilliant decision to start the school.

They ran “summer institutes”, which took advantage of the fact that everyone at other colleges were off in the summer. So students and faculty would come to Black Mountain for the summer and often stay forever.
